I did the R&D to match the textures on the animal characters and was lead texture artist on the series. I used a layering of cross-hatch pencil marks, done on paper and scanned. Then mapped over colour gradients to look like a watercolour wash. The models, made by others in the team, (including Jon Rashid, the project lead and Brian Cosgrove) were rendered at 100% lit to make them look 2D. Outlines were rendered on the 3D models with a plug in for 3D Studio Max. These were comped on to a 2D background environment with the title name "Albie" and human characters also hand drawn. I worked on several series at Cosgrove Hall Films with some really talented people.
